Jay and Maggie are both Arizona natives and have always been “Just Do It Yourself” type of people. Jay worked in the carpentry trades as a younger man before he was hired in 1985, by a growing Arizona-born printing company, to facilitate new store build-outs. Maggie was at home with their five kids until the kids were older and then she also went to work for the same printing company. In 2013, after a hostile takeover of the company, most of the staff - especially those who had worked there a long time - were all laid off by the new owners. After 27 years for Jay and 19 years for Maggie, they suddenly found themselves without paychecks. While 2013 was much earlier than they had planned to retire, thankfully they had the skills to bring in income until they could figure out what was next. They had built a woodshop on their property and started a company called Wasatch Bunkbeds and More where they began to make...you guessed it...bunk beds for kids.

Jay and Maggie had both been very active in their former company’s International meetings, often-times writing and producing opening shows, facilitating breakout sessions, and also speaking to the conference’s US and International attendees in a general session. One of their former workmates, Evan, who happened to be a wonderful graphic artist, suggested that they think about starting a YouTube channel so Jay could teach others some of the knowledge he had gained over the years and utilize his public speaking chops.

Evan suggested they use one of Jay’s nicknames for the channel name and created the logo’d character that still represents Dirt Farmer Jay. He also created a YouTube landing page for them. Jay and Maggie started making videos every once in a while and posting them on YouTube.

It was slow going at first and they were not dedicated to regular posting, which can be deadly to the growth of a YouTube channel. Fortunately, they became friends with Rob Lambert in August of 2018. He owned his own production company and was interested in helping them take their channel to the next level. Both Jay and Maggie attribute the bulk of their success over the last few years to Rob’s expertise and talent as a videographer and editor.
