The Story Behind This Story

When we had our home listed as an Airbnb, we had a long-term guest who stayed with us for over three months and became a part of our family. We were blessed the day he walked into our door and still keep in touch with him to this day.

Years ago, when we had our house listed on Airbnb, we got an inquiry from a young man named Luis. He traveled all over the country for his job and needed to find a room to stay in for three months while in our area. He would be leading a team to revamp the conveyor system for a huge distribution center.

The team worked overnight while the workers were gone because they had to shut down the conveyor to work on it. Luis would arrive home when we were getting up and leave for work when we were going to bed. But on his days off, he loved to hang out with us and we loved it too.

He would come outside and help us around the farm or go to family gatherings with us. He went to church with us, too. On his days off, I would cook for all of us and sometimes he would make us delicious Tex Mex meals. We learned about his family and his two boys that were the pride of his life.

When he left, it was a sad day. He said he’d keep in touch but I thought that over time we’d lose our connection to him. We would say “Hi” on Facebook but that’s about all. Then one night about 10 pm, the doorbell rang. I thought to myself, “Who in the world could that be so late at night?”

When I opened the door, there was Luis. “MADRE!” he shouted and hugged me so tight. He came in and we made him coffee. He was headed to a job in Nevada and said he couldn’t drive past the exit to our valley without stopping by. We talked for an hour or so and we sent him on his way with a “still warm” loaf of zucchini bread.

He’s been back several more times, just stopping by to give us a hug and say hello. I refer to him as “my son from another mother.” Knowing him has been one of life’s best blessings.
